Diving Into the World of Curls

No matter their curl pattern or hair density, curls can be super sensitive to certain ingredients. Here, we break down some of the commonly used hair care ingredients to show why AURA is the best fit for your curly hair needs.

1. SLS and SLES

Our Rituals are completely free of SLS and SLES (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate). These chemicals are the two harshest cleansing sulfates that are usually found in shampoos. Since curly hair tends to be drier due to the nature of the hair cuticle, avoid shampoos with SLS and SLES for a hair-healthier option.

AURA Insight: We include Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate in our Shampoos as an SLS and SLES alternative. This surfactant is much milder than SLS and SLES, and ensures your hair will be cleansed and healthy after each use.

2. Silicones

Silicones are naturally derived synthetic ingredients used to smooth frizz, create shine, and improve the manageability of your hair. While some wavy-haired lovelies swear by water-soluble silicones to tame frizz, others are looking for completely natural ingredients in their curly hair care routine. This ingredient is hotly debated in the curl community, so we’ve decided to include options for everyone.

AURA Insight: Smooth is our only hair goal that contains water-soluble silicones, so we recommend avoiding this as one of your AURA goals if you want a silicone-free Ritual. We only use water-soluble silicones in our hair care formulas, meaning no harsh sulfates are needed to wash them out and they are less likely to build up over time.

3.  Parabens

In addition to being SLS and SLES free, our Rituals are also Paraben-free. What are Parabens, you ask? Parabens are types of preventative preservatives usually placed in beauty products that can dry out your hair and cause your color to fade. To keep your curly hair moisturized (and color-treated hair fresh and vibrant), our Rituals never have Parabens.

When you take our hair care Quiz, we highly recommend Enhance Curls as your top priority when choosing your hair goals. Our specialists hand-selected some of the best ingredients to add to your Ritual to keep your curls fresh, bouncy, and oh-so-healthy.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is one of the most versatile ingredients out there and can be used both in beauty and health products. This oil nourishes and conditions your curls while also extending color longevity. It’s beloved in the curly community for these reasons and more.

Shea Oil

Found in the African Karite Tree, Shea Oil has been a popular natural hair care ingredient for years. This intensely rich oil moisturizes and softens your curls, while its fatty acids protect color and prevent breakage.

Babassu Oil

Extracted from the seeds of the South American Babassu Palm, Babassu Oil is another natural ingredient perfect for your curly hair. This powerhouse substance adds shine while maintaining a youthful finish and rich color to your curly strands.
